This is a new wine from here. The aromas of blackberries, tile, iron, tar and black pepper follow through to a medium to full body, juicy and lightly creamy center palate and a flavorful finish. Shows chocolate and walnut highlights at the end. A blend of syrah, grenache, mourvedre, cabernet sauvignon, malbec, and carmenere. Drink or hold. Score - 94. (jamessuckling.com, April 17, 2020)
At first glance, we could say that all the freshness and radiance of this Don Maximiano has to do with the vintage, a cold year that, at the best cases, has produces very red, very juicy wines full of vibrant acidity. But it could also be due to the work that winemaker Francisco Baettig has been doing with this wine since he took charge of it in 2004. It's slow work to restore this wine's former style (the label has been around since the 1930s) - much more focused on fruit and freshness, with earlier harvests and limited use of new oak barrels. In fact, this is the first time Baettig has made a Don Maximiano with just 13.5° alcohol. And that shows. It's a delicious red wine with herbal tones and pure, sharp acidity, a wine that's ushering in a new era in the history of this classic Chilean label. Score - 97. Unique Kai this year with paprika, blackberry, currant and stone. Full body, layered and beautiful. Wonderful finish. Such soft and polished tannins. Drink or hold. Score - 95. (jamessuckling.com, May 29, 2017)
Plush tobacco leaves, currants, olives and some chili chocolate and meaty spices. Medium to full body with a ripe yet still elegant palate. Juicy, with some dried meat in the finish. Drink now. Vegan. Score - 92. (jamessuckling.com, Aug. 9, 2022)
This is really complex in the nose with crushed blackberries, black pepper, tar and grilled meat. Full body, tight and creamy tannins and a delicious finish. Complex and intriguing. Drink or hold. Score - 95. (jamessuckling.com, April 17, 2020)
Unique aromas of blackberries, sweet herbs and bay leaves with wet earth and violets, too. Medium-to full-bodied, round and fruity with fine, creamy tannins. Tar and slate undertones. Extremely beautiful for the first vintage. Drink or hold. Score - 96. (jamessuckling.com, June 22, 2020)
An enticing pinot with rich, glossy raspberries, grapes, chalk, forest-floor berries, roses, white pepper and exotic spices. This is really tight and chalky on the palate, with super-fine, mealy tannins and an extremely long, linear finish. Very pretty, elegant and nuanced. Drinkable now, but best after 2024. Score - 97. (jamessuckling.com, Dec. 13, 2022)
To select the lots that go into this wine (560 12-bottle cases made), winemaker Francisco Baettig chose 4.5 of the 50 hectares of pinot noir that Errázuriz has in the Aconcagua Costa zone, about 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. It consists of three parcels with slate-rich soils, the most important of which faces south, a cooler orientation that projects that freshness onto the grapes, especially when it comes to warm years like 2019. 15% of this wine was whole-cluster fermented, and 100% of it was aged in barrels (45% new oak) for 13 months. The result is a superlative pinot with tremendous intensity but that's very fresh at the same time. The tannins construct a backbone that retains all of the fruity flavors on the mid-palate, making this a wine that offers a vertical sensation that underscores its freshness but that also underpins its body. It doesn't overflow - it's athletic and fibrous with a lot of nerve. This is the sixth version of Las Pizarras, and it's the deepest and most complex to date. It may also be the one with the greatest projection in the bottle. Score - 98. (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2021)
The Aconcagua Costa area was officially recognized in 2012 following a lengthy effort by Errázuriz. This is sourced from vines planted in 2005 and 2009 in volcanic soils, and has a distinct and fine flinty mineral character. Ripe pear, tangerine, lemon and a vibrant, energetic core born of the influence of the nearby ocean. Sip or pair with seafood.
