Reflecting the cooler growing season in 2016, this is one of the most elegant Don Max releases I've tasted. Sourced from seven different blocks, it combines Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and increasing amounts of Malbec. Finesse, equilibrium and palate length with deftly handled 50% new wood. Drink date: 2021-2035. Score - 96. (timatkin.com, Chile Special Report 2019)
Unique Kai this year with paprika, blackberry, currant and stone. Full body, layered and beautiful. Wonderful finish. Such soft and polished tannins. Drink or hold. Score - 95. (jamessuckling.com, May 29, 2017)
Winemaker Francisco Baettig took charge of this wine in 2004, but it wasn't until 2015 that a new style (consistent with Baettig's new way of thinking about his wines) began to appear. It was slow work to recover the old style of this wine (a brand that has existed since 1930) that's now much more focused on fruit and freshness by cutting back on the use of new barrels and harvesting earlier. And in a perfect year such as 2018, that work has crystallized in this new Don Max that's based on 70% cabernet sauvignon from Errázuriz's property in Aconcagua, planted in 1978. And that cabernet rich in balsamic notes is transformed here into mints and herbs along with fresh and juicy red fruits. Its very low alcohol content (13.5º) gives it a certain lightness and a sensation of medium body. But don't be fooled - this is a wine for the cellar. It has enough acidity and tannins to evolve elegantly for a decade. Score - 97. (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2021)
The 2015 La Cumbre is produced as a mix of Syrah grapes from the cooler Max 5 vineyard in Aconcagua, with less from Max 1, and from vines in the cooler Aconcagua Costa. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented in stainless steel vats at temperatures ranging from 26 to 28 degrees Celsius. The wine aged for some 22 months in French barriques, half of them new. Despite the warmer year, the 2015s are the freshest wines I remember from Errázuriz. They were able to harvest earlier, and all the wines feel very fresh; in the Syrah, they have low yields and stopped pushing for more ripeness and keeping the vines with enough water so they don't get stressed. This is a spicier expression with some varietal aromas, violets, raspberry leaves and sour cherries. The palate is completely dry and lively, with very fine tannins and a supple finish. This is a more complete and deeper wine than the Aconcagua Costa Syrah, but I still like the style of the Coastal better. Drink Date: 2017-2023. Score - 93. Unique aromas of blackberries, sweet herbs and bay leaves with wet earth and violets, too. Medium-to full-bodied, round and fruity with fine, creamy tannins. Tar and slate undertones. Extremely beautiful for the first vintage. Drink or hold. Score - 96. (jamessuckling.com, June 22, 2020)
To select the lots that go into this wine (560 12-bottle cases made), winemaker Francisco Baettig chose 4.5 of the 50 hectares of pinot noir that Errázuriz has in the Aconcagua Costa zone, about 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. It consists of three parcels with slate-rich soils, the most important of which faces south, a cooler orientation that projects that freshness onto the grapes, especially when it comes to warm years like 2019. 15% of this wine was whole-cluster fermented, and 100% of it was aged in barrels (45% new oak) for 13 months. The result is a superlative pinot with tremendous intensity but that's very fresh at the same time. The tannins construct a backbone that retains all of the fruity flavors on the mid-palate, making this a wine that offers a vertical sensation that underscores its freshness but that also underpins its body. It doesn't overflow - it's athletic and fibrous with a lot of nerve. This is the sixth version of Las Pizarras, and it's the deepest and most complex to date. It may also be the one with the greatest projection in the bottle. Score - 98. (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2021)
An enticing pinot with rich, glossy raspberries, grapes, chalk, forest-floor berries, roses, white pepper and exotic spices. This is really tight and chalky on the palate, with super-fine, mealy tannins and an extremely long, linear finish. Very pretty, elegant and nuanced. Drinkable now, but best after 2024. Score - 97. (jamessuckling.com, Dec. 13, 2022)
Plush tobacco leaves, currants, olives and some chili chocolate and meaty spices. Medium to full body with a ripe yet still elegant palate. Juicy, with some dried meat in the finish. Drink now. Vegan. Score - 92. (jamessuckling.com, Aug. 9, 2022)
Max Carmenère may not be the sexiest wine in the Errázuriz line up, but it's often one of my favourites, delivering impressive value for money too. Smooth, refreshing and elegant, with liquorice, black cherry and patisserie flavours, filigree tannins and not a sign of vegetal greenness. Drink date: 2024-2030. Score - 94.
