Wakefield is the name used in North America by Australia's eminent Taylor family. Their Clare Valley Shiraz will offer great depth and richness with toast, nuts, prune, herbs and coffee. Pair with lamb.
This tangy Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavours, including sunny tropical fruit, peach, citrus, apple, buttercream and toast. It will be wonderful with grilled chicken or an avocado-and-chickpea salad.
Wakefield Estate 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a terrific value red from cool-climate vineyards in the Clare Valley and Limestone Coast. Bold and flavourful, this full-bodied wine shows layers of dark berry, red cherry, roasted herbs, cocoa and a hint of toasted nuttiness, all supported by vibrant acidity and smooth tannins. Matured in French oak, it strikes a harmonious balance between richness and finesse. Pour with beef short ribs or grilled portobello mushrooms. Drink date: 2025-2032. Best Value Wine. Score - 95. Bright South Australian Pinot with a light to medium body and an easy flow of cherry, strawberry, raspberry and plum. Subtle oak, cinnamon spice and a mineral edge bring shape, with brisk acidity and a clean finish suited to roast chicken, pork or mushroom dishes.
Clare Valley Merlot offers ripe plum, black cherry, mulberry and blackberry wrapped in gentle oak spice. Hints of eucalyptus, cocoa, clove and green herb bring regional character, while silky tannins and a tangy finish keep the fruit plush but neatly balanced.
Youthful, lifted aromas of blackberry, mulberry, satsuma plum, sweet spice and cedary oak. The palate is dark, juicy and mouth-filling. There's a drive of pure dark fruits along with bramble, dark chocolate, licorice and mint. The tannins are firm and structured and the acidity brings cut and snap to the finish. Big, bold, juicy and very nicely balanced. Drink date: 2024-2034. Score - 95. (Aaron Brasher, therealreview.com, May 25, 2024)
