... Laden with dark fruit, an assortment of baking spices and very silky smooth tannins working across the full-bodied palate. While aged 1 year in French puncheons (20% new) might not read as much, it comes across as more: charry, sweet and meaty. Drink by: 2034. Score - 95. Cabernet sauvignon (72%), malbec (18%), petit verdot (6%) and merlot (4%), aged for 12 months in French oak, 25% new. Salt and pepper, blueberry and blackcurrant, cloves and minerally/ferrous characters. This is a seriously good wine. It's characterful, balanced, lengthy and interesting, its dark-berried fruit flavours sunk deep into the palate, its freshness maintained, and its finish as convincing as everything that came before. Special Value. Drink by: 2040. Score - 96. (Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 7, 2024)
Includes 'a little splash of malbec'; gold medal winner National Wine Show of Australia '21. The base wines came from the 1997-2022 vintages. Has threaded the needle with lower dosages than usual (hence the gold medal), investing the wine with freshness and finely wrought tannins. Is there nothing outside the skills of Paul Hotker? Not to mention, value for money across the board. Drink from: 2023. Drink by: 2025. Special Value. Score - 95. (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, July 6, 2023)
[Though not the same release reviewed by Vic Harradine, this wine will offer similar character and quality.] Lifted appealing aromas of dark berry fruit - raspberry, currant and plum compote - abound on the nose of this gem. A frothy mousse when poured, it captures the palate with a lively, fresh wash of off-dry flavours - black plum, bramble berry and dark cherry adorned with piquant spice, mocha and hints of dark chocolate. It finishes lengthy with persistent purity of fruit from palate replays. Pour on its own to welcome guests or with roast duck. Remove from the fridge twenty minutes before service. Drink now. [A style that will drink for 2+ years from release.] Score - 93. (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Dec. 7, 2021)
Shiraz-dominant blend with cabernet sauvignon and malbec also contributing. Nine months in French oak, but only 5% of it is new. Fresh fruit is to the fore here, but there's plenty going on besides. Dried herbs, a lick of cedarwood, crushed fennel notes and sweet tobacco lead to smidgens of resin and dust. It feels controlled, well balanced and authentic. Special Value. Drink from: 2025. Drink by: 2031. Score - 92. (Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 7, 2024)
Pure, precise fruit defines this exceptional value from Down Under. It has the character and presence of a far more expensive offering - just wonderful. There's elegant, well-framed blackcurrant, cassis, plum, lifted herbal tones, smoke, cedar, and wonderfully fragrant spices. Ideal for prime rib or steak.
Open fermented with 15% whole berries, left 9-12 days on skins and matured for 12 months in French puncheons and hogsheads (10% new). A pleasant medium-bodied shiraz that is bright and fresh, with savoury black fruits and balanced tannins. Attractive price! Drink from: 2030. Drink by: 2035. [Or enjoy tonight after an hour in the decanter.] Special Value. Score - 92. (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 3, 2022)
