This is an amazing Amarone with incredible aromas of dried fruit, raisins, chocolate and spice. Intense dried flowers. Fruit tea. Minerals. Full-bodied with a deep and rich finish. Juicy and chewy. Incredible structure. Dry finish. One to age for decades ahead in the cellar. Score - 98. (jamessuckling.com, Dec. 17, 2018)
Dense garnet, with a nose of walnut husks, toasted black pepper, sour cherries and ash. Smooth and soft on the palate, with a full body and ripe, silky tannins balanced by zesty acidity. Lovely fruit with an extremely long, nutty aftertaste. Very attractive. Drink now. Score - 95. (jamessuckling.com, May 1, 2024)
From a quality-focused family winery, this is big and powerful, even for an Amarone. Rich and plush-textured with luscious chocolate, licorice, prune, nutty and floral flavours. Demands a hearty meal like barbecued back ribs, rack of lamb or steak.
An exquisite wine from a beloved producer. Spice up your most extravagant parties with this stellar Amarone.
The perfect holiday dinner duo: a classic red and a classic sparkling wine from one of Italy's most renowned wine families.
From Zenato, a tasty duo that add sparkle and gravitas to any celebration.
A decadent burst of vanilla bean and almond paste gives way to a more refined and pretty mix of crushed apples, lemon oil and spices as the 2020 Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato comes to life in the glass. It's silky-smooth and supple with a textural wave of ultra-ripe orchard fruits perfectly balanced by saline minerals and tongue-curling acidity. The 2020 lingers impossibly long while remaining wonderfully fresh, with hints of citrus custard and sweet spice that linger on and on. The Riserva Sergio Zenato finds a lovely balance between oak influence and the zesty character of Trebbiano di Lugana. Drinking window: 2023-2028. Score - 92. (Eric Guido, vinous.com, Dec., 2022)
Ripasso wines are fondly referred to as 'baby Amarone' by some. Zenato's baby is bigger and richer than most, with intense flavours of chocolate, mixed berry jam, cocoa, smoke and licorice. Pair it with risotto with gorgonzola, or grilled sausages and tomatoes.
This wine has forward aromas of black plum and blueberry pie. Though not an Amarone, the winery partially dries 50% of the grapes for a few months creating a wine made from both fresh fruit and dried fruit. This creates a wine that is lush and rich on the palate, but vibrant and intense in equal proportions. It is silky smooth, with a long finish of spiced plums and dried herbs. [Drink till 2028+.] Score - 91. (Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2022)
From a much-beloved producer, this fresh, juicy white wine shows hints of tropical fruit under the richly defined apple, peach, honeysuckle and citrus. A characterful minerality provides added depth and distinction. A glorious sipper, it will also work with seafood, ham, or grilled squash and mushrooms with fresh herbs.
