From the excellent Les Pau sector at the northern end of Clos du Roy. Not the deepest of purples but with a most engaging bouquet. The whole bunches are very prettily in tune here. Flowers on top of the vivid and juicy red fruit. Another level of class here, with complexity at the back of the palate and excellent length. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Jan. 2024. Score - 92-93. Dense and impressive, displaying notes of fruitcake, gingerbread, kirsch and bittersweet chocolate. Accents of espresso, sage, huckleberry and wild blackberry are thick and toothsome, with plenty of momentum on the long finish. Drink now through 2035. Score - 93. Popular Oyster Bay hails from the Marlborough region, ground zero for classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Expect notes of expressive citrus, yellow berries melange and fresh herbs with mineral notes. Pair with sea scallops pan-fried in butter with asparagus on the side.
This shows notes of blackcurrants, tea leaves, chocolate and leafy herbs. Some cedar, too. Medium- to full-bodied with creamy tannins and a juicy and savory dark fruit character. Attractive and easy to drink. Drink now [till 2025+]. Score - 90. (jamessuckling.com, Dec. 11, 2022)
Oyster Bay has long been a flag-bearer for New Zealand premium wine. Their PG is soft and juicy with generous grapefruit, yellow plum, floral lift and minerality, and falls between the Alsatian and Italian styles. Enjoy with grilled pork.
A real crowd-pleasing Chardonnay that shows there's more to New Zealand than Sauvignon Blanc. Well-handled, a touch smoky oak, yellow plum, vanilla, nuts and citrus - a model for trendy cool-climate Chard. Oysters are an obvious match, but try with sautéed fish or grilled pork chops.
Herbaceous nose with dark bramble berries leading to a generously fruity palate featuring dark cherry. There are refreshing, lifted and fine-grained tannins alongside a blackcurrant-filled, rounded finish. Score - 91. (International Wine & Spirit Competition, 2023)
Salmon pink. Gentle red berries with a refreshing acidity. Some lovely crushed hazelnuts on the palate. Long refreshing finish. Score - 90. (International Wine Challenge, 2023)
Generous aromas offering cream and ripe stone fruits. The palate is fully rounded, allowing subtle toasted oak hints to open delicately. The mousse is creamy and adds an appreciated weight to the mouthfeel. There is a delicate energy throughout, bringing us to an intense, lengthy finish. Score - 96.
