This red combines fresh cherry and strawberry fruit with graphite, earth and leather notes for a positive impression. A swath of burly tannins lingers on the finish, needing time to meld with the ripe fruit and rich texture. Best from 2024 through 2043. Score - 95. The Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne (with 8,700 bottles coming to the market at the new year) has a slightly darker character with more savory tones compared to the already toasty classic Brunello from the same vintage. Made with organic fruit, the wine shows hints of fireplace soot, Viennese coffee and grilled herb over a full-bodied texture. The tannins are well managed and so is the acidity. This is the first vintage in which 'Prime Donne' has earned recognition as an official 'vigna,' or vineyard, in the appellation. Drink date: 2026-2040. Score - 94. The 2019 Orcia Cenerentola is intense: it gradually wafts up with a smoky mix of crushed rocks, dried flowers and blackcurrants, complicated by an exotic spiciness that I find wildly appealing. This is silken and round, yet quite cool-toned in feel. Depths of ripe red and blue fruits take on a tactile feel as crunchy minerals saturate under an air of violet inner florals. This finishes long, classically dry and structured, leaving echoes of black licorice and sage with a top note of chalk dust. Easily the best young vintage of Cenerentola that I've ever tasted, the 2019 is a blend of 65% Sangiovese and 35% Foglia Tonda.
