75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, 9% Cabernet Franc. One of the most encouraging qualities of those Chilean wines which made it through to gold and platinum this year, our judges felt, was a new aromatic complexity and a much finer understanding of aromatic maturity in the vineyard than in the past. This complex, subtle and still youthful blend offers an excellent example of this. It's dark black-red, with creamy plum and currant notes as well as a hint of fragrant, cured Havana leaf. On the palate, it is concentrated and long, with admirable freshness lending life and energy to the red and black fruits. Meaty yet supple tannins bring ballast. It's harmonious and accessible now, but there is enough density here to carry it effortlessly through half a decade's maturation. Best in Show. Score - 97. (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2022)

Sideral is something of a second wine after Altaïr. They share the same origin, but Sideral is a different selection, which this year is 73% cabernet sauvignon, 11% syrah, 9% carmenere, 4% petit verdot, and 3% cabernet franc. The wine was aged for 16 months in oak barrels, 20% of them new, as well as in 2,000-liter foudres. It's usually released a year before Altaïr, and this year, it's a juicy wine full of aromatic notes and flavors of red fruits and herbs (cabernet franc and carmenere undoubtedly put their signature on this vintage) in a body of firm acidity (very much in tune with a cool season like 2021) and fine, sharp tannins. An elegant and subtle wine that will gain in complexity with another four or five years in the bottle. [This will continue to evolve through mid-2030s.] Score - 95. Tarapacá, under different ownership and management, has been producing wines for 150 years, always with a focus on Maipo Valley vineyards. This 68% cabernet sauvignon, 30% syrah, and 2% cabernet franc is entirely from estate-owned vineyards surrounding the Tarapacá winery in Isla de Maipo, planted on granite and clay soils. It's a red wine that's very much in the house's style - the smooth texture, the herbal and fruity aromas in similar measure, the very fine, sharp tannins. Score - 93. This superb world-class [Pinot Noir] is made with clone 777 sourced from three sub-parcels on different soil types. Rose petal and Turkish delight scents segue into a palate that's vibrant, subtle and refreshing with 35% whole bunches adding texture and spice. Long and well defined, it has layers of succulent raspberry and wild strawberry and subtle oak. Drink date: 2023-2029. Score - 96. (timatkin.com, Chile Special Report 2021)

Fresh and juicy, with a layer of chrysanthemum and pink peppercorn up front and a plush core of fresh raspberry and plum, with a subtle mineral underpinning and fresh acidity stretching out the finish around a note of cocoa powder. Attractive aromas of ripe blackberries and black cherries with hints of tobacco, walnuts and spices. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins and bright acidity. Luscious and juicy with a polished texture and a long, flavorful finish. 58% carmenere, 29% cabernet sauvignon, 11% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Lot 4 comes from a 1.5-hectare block in the Maitén Vineyard, planted in 2008 on the granite and clay soils of the Coastal Mountains. Aging was an important aspect of this wine. It spent seven months, half in foudres, 30% in cement eggs, and the rest in 400-liter barrels. This sauvignon blanc has an accent on the concentration of the fruit and the sensation of compact, dense tropical fruit surrounded by firm, almost mineral acidity. It's juicy and tense, and the sense of depth is important here, filling your mouth with that fruity sensation. [Enjoy this wine for another 2+ years.] Score - 95. This classic expression from Tarapacá has generous black fruit supported by vanilla, savoury herb, and earth notes. The tannins are formidable but integrated. A wine that shows Cabernet's depth, character and pedigree. Serve with grilled lamb or steak.

For Garuma, winemaker Viviana Navarrete uses three blocks with different exposures in the El Maitén Vineyard, planted in the Leyda zone near the coast of central Chile in 2008. Fermented primarily in stainless steel, but with 15% barrel ferment to add texture, this is a creamy sauvignon, although it also has firm, almost lemon-juice acidity.
