Delivers the panoply of ginger, lemon cream, green tea, honeycomb and mango flavors you expect from a world-class dessert wine, combined with a lacy, filigreed texture and mineral underpinning that is rare. So pure and balanced, all the sweetness is absorbed on the finish, leaving an incredibly tender yet exhilarating impression of fresh fruit. Drink now through 2040. Collectible. Score - 99. Intense acidity cuts through the rich and plump profile of this sweet version, creating harmony and focus. Shows a wide range of flavors, with golden raisin, fig and flambéed pear notes on the palate, delivering incredible purity. Very lush and expressive, yet elegant. Long finish. Drink now through 2044. Score - 96. (Aleksandar Zecevic, winespectator.com, Nov. 15, 2019)
I had two bottles of the 20-year-old 1997 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux Première Trie and they were pretty different, as were the Le Mont Moelleux Première Tries from the same tasting. The first Haut-Lieu I opened displayed an intense and luminescent golden-orange color followed by an intense, concentrated bouquet with dark caramel, white nougat, burnt milk and vegetal aromas (legumes). Very sweet but also salty, finessed and vibrantly fresh on the palate, this is a remarkably lithe but intense, tight and complex Haut-Lieu with great tension, finesse and complexity on the powerful, herbal (marjoram), slightly bitter and astringent finish. That bitter and astringent finish convinced me to open the second bottle, just to make sure it was due to bottle variation and not a problem with the wine. In fact, the second bottle was purer, finer, fresher and more precise on the nose, provided with spicy lime rind aromas. This bottle doesn't show any bitterness on the palate but has good grip and mineral tension which balances the sweetness of 83 grams perfectly. This bottling shows great purity, finesse and elegance on the palate, with delicate but persistent salinity. The wine is dense and compact and the apricot fruit is very clear and concentrated, the finish lovely, refreshing and salty. There is still great aging potential for the 1997 Clos du Bourg. Drink date: 2018-2040. Score - 96. (Stephan Reinhardt, robertparker.com, Feb. 28, 2018)
The 2018 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux is clear, deep, pure and flinty on the intense but fine and coolish-mineral nose. Very distinctive! Lush and intense but also pure, vital and tensioned on the palate, this elegant and seductive Le Mont offers a straightforward drive and a highly complex and energetic finish with grip and great mineral tension. A gorgeous, crystalline, persistently salty and tightly woven Chenin with great complexity and energy. Very attractive already today! Tasted in May 2019. Drink date: 2027-2060. Score - 95. A wine that just hints at its enormous future. It is opulent, rich, rounded, full of quince, spice, layers of honey and apricots. It is gorgeous without losing any freshness. Keep for seven years [then drink into the mid-to-late 2030s]. Cellar Selection. Score - 95. (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, June 1, 2011)
2001 was supposedly not a good vintage for sweet wine, but this one is rather attractive. Deep golden, and theme carries: all the way through: golden pear, golden apple, grilled pineapple. On the palate, there's apricot nectar and honey balanced by good fresh acidity. At first fruity, then serious chalky minerality at midpalate, a smokiness even a touch of tobacco, with a finish that's austere and precise. 48 grams per liter residual sugar. Drinking window: 2020-2031. Score - 94. (Jason Wilson, vinous.com, July 2020)
