Susana Balbo has been called the 'Evita of Wine' and the 'Queen of Torrontés.' Her Crios Torrontés is floral and fruity with apple blossom, peach, honey, pear and honeydew melon. Argentina's signature grape will work with smoked meats or seafood.
100% Malbec. Lively purple flowers and fruit, hint of chocolate and pepper. The palate has a firm structure supported by plenty of fruit. Score - 92. (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2025)
Aromas of olives, tea leaves, charcoal and ripe, baked currants and cherries. Juicy and fruity on the palate, with lightly chewy tannins, a medium body and a linear mouthfeel. Medium-length finish. Drink now. Score - 90. (Zekun Shuai, jamessuckling.com, Oct. 2, 2024)
Exotic perfumes, showing seductive licorice, balsamic character to the blackberry fruit, violets, mushrooms and cocoa powder. A full-bodied red with precise, ultra-fine tannins that got dialed into the juicy core of black fruit. Beautifully polished and long. Such a caressing wine with a complex, lengthy aftertaste. Delicious now, but can hold. Score - 95. (jamessuckling.com, May 3, 2022)
Aged for 13 months in barrels, 30% new and the rest of various uses, this malbec from Altamira, in the Uco Valley, has a pronounced accent on floral notes, something that is common in many malbecs from the area. Here, it is also accompanied by a lot of ripe red and black fruit, to a degree that does not become tiresome. The tannins create a firm texture with enough strength to support the weight. A delicious example of mountain malbec, a fresh Andean breeze to accompany grilled meats. [Will evolve into the mid-2030s+.] Score - 95. (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2025)
Super tangy nose with tons of black pepper, thyme and lavender. Mediterranean spices, stones and some red berries. Juicy and precise on the palate with fine-grained tannins and a long, spicy finish. A sensible, terroir-led malbec from Valle de Pedernal. Long, long finish. Drink or hold [through 2028]. Score - 96. (Zekun Shuai, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 26, 2023)
Exclusively from vineyards planted on stony, sandy soils in the Los Chacayes zone of the Uco Valley, this malbec displays the characteristic notes of that place. Here, the flowers, herbs, and firm tannins form a solid base that supports the succulent ripe red- and black-fruit flavors and firm, juicy acidity. Score - 93.
