Opaque violet. Intensely perfumed, expansive black and blue fruit preserve, potpourri,Moroccan spice and botanical herb scents are complemented by smoky mineral and vanilla flourishes. Sappy, penetrating and deeply concentrated on the palate, offering vibrant, mineral-laced black currant, bitter cherry, chewing tobacco, mocha and floral pastille flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. Shows superb focus and vibrant, floral lift on the wonderfully long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind cherry liqueur, candied violet and spicecake notes. Drinking Window: 2027-2045. Score - 98. (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, Feb. 2021)
I tasted a bottle of the 2009 Único blind and was taken by the freshness, the red fruit notes and the Burgundian-like characteristics of this vintage, which on paper was quite warm and dry. I also tasted the 2009 Valbuena, which is always more approachable, and was blown away by its aromatics. With time in the glass the Único opened up and got closer to the character of Valbuena but with more depth and clout, while showing extremely elegant. I tasted it again in the context of all the wines from the group, and it delivered all that I saw when I tasted it blind. It takes some time to unfurl its aromatic palette, and it feels young and somewhat undeveloped, younger than it is. It has a touch that made me think of the old vintages of Único on the nose but with very polished tannins and a soft mouthfeel that provides elegance. This is a wine that ages for no less than ten years before it's released. 2009 seems like a great vintage for Vega Sicilia, much better than what I anticipated. It should develop nicely in bottle. To be released in 2020, the NV Único Reserva Especial 2020 Release is a non-vintage blend of 59 barrels from 2008, 2009 and 2010, mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has been getting closer to the style of the Único, and the blend is from vintages very close to the current release of Único, but somehow this year I think the blend has added some complexity to the bottled wine, which has the heart and soul of the 2010 vintage. In fact, they told me they are keeping more wine to have some older vintages to blend for this Reserva Especial, because in the last few years, the wine has been a little too young for the style that it used to have in the past. This has finesse and some of the Burgundian style of the blends of yesteryear. It was bottled in June 2016. Drink date: 2020-2030. Score - 98. (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, Dec. 30, 2019)
'The only problem with the 2011,' says Gonzalo Iturriaga, 'is that it followed 2010.' I gave the latter wine a perfect score, so I know what he means. And yet this is still a fantastic Único in its own right. Marrying Tinto Fino with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it's not as powerful or showy as the 2010, but has considerable elegance and finesse. Sweet, leafy, balsamic flavours are framed by perfumed French and 30% American oak, with the mint of the Cabernet surprisingly noticeable on the refreshing finish. The tannins are very fine indeed, caressing the tongue as they pass. Drink date: 2025-2040. Score - 98. (timatkin.com, Ribera Del Duero 2020/21 Top 100)
The NV Único Reserva Especial 2025 Release was produced with a blend of wines from 2011, 2012 and 2013, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.86 and five grams of acidity. It has the core of the 2012 vintage, possibly the higher percentage in the blend too, providing the power and structure to go along with the freshness and tension of 2013, which also contributes some balsamic characteristics, and it has less of the 2011. The wine shows extra complexity and elegance, and it has the Único nose with more nuance and subtleness. But what I like the most is the silky texture and the elegance of the tannins - as usual, they combine more developed characteristics with elegance and freshness. This is another stellar release of their non-vintage classical blend, slowly going back to the style of yesteryear. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink date: 2024-2040. Score - 98. Milk chocolate, butterscotch and black cherry dominate the nose on this deep-violet-colored wine. Rich flavors of black plum, black cherry, chocolate-covered espresso bean and lavender are nestled into a framework of deep-set tannins that drop off into a spice-filled finish. Drink now through 2052. Cellar Selection. Score - 97. (Mike DeSimone, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2022)
(fermented in large oak tanks and aged for six years in new French and American oak barriques) Saturated ruby. Explosively perfumed aromas of fresh ripe red fruits, floral oils, pipe tobacco and incense take on sexy vanilla and woodsmoke nuances as the wine opens up. Densely packed yet shockingly lithe on the palate, offering intense cherry liqueur, red currant and spicecake flavors given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Shows superb energy and clarity, finishing sweet, smoky and extremely long; velvety tannins add gentle grip. Drinking window: 2022-2036. Score - 97. (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, May 2017)
Sourced from vines averaging 17 years of age grown on one of the world's most celebrated vineyard sites, this is a classic, hedonistic, intense Tokaji. Ample orange, mango, tropical fruit, and layered spice. This will age for decades.
Berry, smoke, violet and sandalwood aromas follow through to a full, layered palate that shows super polished tannins that are caressing and long. It's tight and very long. Give it two or three years to soften. Drink after 2023. Score - 97. (jamessuckling.com, Oct. 14, 2021)
