Very attractive with ripe cherries, red plums, dark chocolate and spices with hints of dried lavender and citrus peel. Medium-bodied with lots of energy and tension. Tannins are polished and well-integrated to the wine. Very complete and balanced. Crunchy and long. 100% sangiovese. From organically grown grapes. Better from 2025. Score - 95. The vineyards sources of the Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Sangiovese (40%), and Merlot (20%) that comprise this blend are located on a hilltop along the shores of a coastal lake, which lends this wine its name. Aromas of leather, graphite, and plum skin indicate its dark nature. Juicy with firm tannins, it offers a luxurious flavor profile of violets and cinnamon spice as well as a distinct mouthfeel. Here the textbook is written on producing Riserva from 100 per cent sangiovese out of vintage as humid as they will come. Done so by making the most of vineyards at elevation in a cool location, that being Radda and selecting top level phenolic berries worthy of this place on the Chianti Classic pyramid. Composed of 65% Sangiovese and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Balifico is unfolding with complex layers of tobacco, leather, plum, and violets. Fleshy and supple, with a round texture and finely polished tannins, it offers ripe and weightless notes of black cherry, forest floor, and mocha. Drink 2025-2040. Score - 95. Of all the 2021s to taste and assess there is no shock that Volpaia's is just about as young and immovable as any. This is not major news for a vintage of great structure matched by upbringing for classic Classico. These are children of manners and respect, knowing their place in history, they being sangiovese, reticently expressive, necessary patient, with this Volpaia as experienced and abiding as any. The substance is that of a layered and complex weave with five per cent merlot involved to soften but also pull verdancy from a very tannic example.
