A real floral note to the red cherry and blueberry fruit aromas - so pure, with an enticing stalky freshness. The lengthy palate is equally juicy and vibrant, packed with dusky damsons and crunchy plums, along with sappy tannins, creamy vanilla oak tones and a focused seam of cleansing acidity. Elegant, nimble and youthful. Drinking window: 2024-2040. Score - 96. (Tina Gellie, decanter.com, June 9, 2022)
This brilliant red blend - now part of the Cape's elite - comes from the same trio of vineyards each year. A triumph in a difficult vintage, it has the lowest alcohol since 1993 and artfully combines Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Cabernet Franc and 11% Merlot, with ageing in new oak. Poised, structured, yet fresh, with cedarwood, red cherry and blackberry fruit, elegant tannins and a long, balanced finish. Classy stuff. Drink date: 2025-2035. Score - 98. (timatkin.com, South Africa Special Report 2022)
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 13% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Paul Sauer is beautifully intense and utterly seductive, the aromatics pulling you in with their perfumed notes of incense, violets, black currant, saline oyster shell, black cherry, sweet cherry tobacco and graphite with subtle blueberry notes and a subtle kiss of sweet cedar and vanilla pod spice. The palate shows sprawling breadth and depth with a gentle picante spice together with a noticeably intense salinity and maritime, nori seaweed nuance before more bold flavours of black currant, mulberry, black cherry and blueberry coat the mouth. The fine silky tannins are deceptively taut and crisp with the fresh glassy acids adding to the wine's obvious power, focus and superb intensity. So much wine in the glass, so much to assimilate! The 2021 Paul Sauer represents a true Cape Bordeaux blend masterclass once again from Abrie Beeslaar! Drink from 2025 to 2050+. Score - 99. (gregsherwoodmw.com, March 21, 2024)
I'd like to give a bottle of this reliably delicious wine to all the people who say they hate Pinotage. Smoky, serious and rich, boasting aromas of violets, plums and wood smoke, it's concentrated, textured and fine, with tannins that suggest that it will age well in bottle. Drink: 2015-2025. Score - 94. (timatkin.com, South Africa Special Report)
Finer, more refined aromas than Kadette version, subtly spicy & scrubby. 2019 dense more than heavy, fresher than 14.5% alcohol & 100% new oak suggest - beautifully balanced & lively, with characteristic sweet fruit but a fairly dry finish. [Enjoy through 2034+.] Score - 94. (Platter's South African Wine Guide, 2022)
Aromas of plums, mulberries, grilled meat, dried herbs and charred bark. Medium body with fine tannins. Balanced, creamy and vibrant with fresh acidity and a precise, flavorful finish. Excellent expression of pinotage. Sustainable. Drink or hold [through 2026+]. Score - 93. (jamessuckling.com, Jan. 24, 2022)
Not too far behind Black Label in terms of quality - and it's also a quarter of the price - this is a nuanced, beautifully expressed Pinotage from a master of the grape. Matured in 80% new oak, it displays liquorice, plum and black cherry flavours, subtle cinnamon and vanilla spices, plush tannins and supporting acidity. Drink date: 2023-2032. Score - 94. (timatkin.com, South Africa Special Report 2022)
Seductive and compelling nose with dark cherries, roasted meat, rosemary, thyme and baking spices. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Textural and layered with focus and balance. Bright fruit kicking in towards the finish. Drink or hold. Score - 93. (jamessuckling.com, Dec. 10, 2023)
A blend of 39% Pinotage, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, it was matured for 12 months in second- and third-fill barrels (as opposed to Paul Sauer's 24 months in 100% new oak). On the nose, Kadette shows plum, cherry and cassis plus hints of vanilla, cigar box, spice and earth. The palate is medium bodied with excellent fruit expression and plenty of verve (alcohol is 14.26%). Pure and fresh with crunchy tannins, the finish slightly salty. Remarkably youthful and yet the relationship of parts already so aesthetically consistent, it offers enormous pleasure. Score - 93. (Christian Eedes, winemag.co.za, June 27, 2024)
