An opulent yet tensioned young red with blackberries, violets and black olive skin character. Full-bodied. But has so much energy and focus. Goes on for minutes. A blend of merlot and sangiovese. Best after 2028. Score - 98. (jamessuckling.com, Nov. 28, 2023)
A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the Belguardo Mazzei 2020 Maremma Toscana Rosso Riserva Tenuta Belguardo is a solid and contemporary wine that shows precise and clean winemaking and quality fruit. The wine navigates the hot vintage well by showing soft blackberry, plum and velvety tannins over generous texture. Drink date: 2023-2032. Score - 93. (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Feb. 22, 2024)
La Badiola Gran Selezione 2017 is such a perfect example of a Radda Chianti Classico. These are some of the highest vineyards in the area at 550m above sea level, giving cool nighttime temperatures and a longer, slower, ripening season. With beautifully pure red berry, cherry and violet aromas and flavours, the thing that sets this wine apart is the seamless quality of the tannins and the melting texture. Drinking window: 2021-2033. Score - 97. (Susan Hulme, MW, decanter.com, June 3, 2021)
An extremely aromatic red with currants, flowers and spices, following through to a full-bodied yet so crunchy and juicy palate with crushed blackberries and raspberries. Citrusy acidity. Bright and agile. Drink or hold. Score - 96. (jamessuckling.com, July 4, 2022)
With fruit from high-elevation vineyards in Radda in Chianti at 570 meters above sea level with sandstone and schistic galestro soils, the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiòla shows tension and linearity over a full-bodied Sangiovese finish. The aromas in this pretty wine veer toward wild berry and blackberry with crushed stone and peat moss. There is a delicate floral note as well. The wine closes with excellent structure and freshness. This still needs time in the bottle. Drink date: 2024-2040. Score - 94+. (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Sept. 21, 2023)
Three single-vineyard Chiantis from Mazzei. Exquisite expressions for lovers of classic Italian wines.
This is aromatic with blueberries and black cherries, as well as hints of blue flowers, spices, dark chocolate and crushed stones. Full-bodied with layers of firm, fine-grained tannins and deep blue fruit. Structured and focused with a lingering finish that continues to build. Well crafted. Better after 2025 [and will hold until 2038]. Score - 95. (jamessuckling.com, Jan. 5, 2023)
Crushed blackberries with hints of flowers that follow through to a medium to full body, chewy tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Drink or hold. Score - 93. (jamessuckling.com, Nov. 7, 2019)
