The 2019 Malbec Siesta en el Tahuantinsuyu from Vista Flores, Uco Valley was aged for 14 months in barrels. Purple to the eye. The bold aromatic profile features fresh plum, violets and herbs against a fruity backdrop, with each descriptor coming through precisely. Unctuous in feel with a medium body and juicy, nimble flow, the tannins are refined and enhance the delicate character before the rewardingly bold and fruity finish. Drinking window: 2022-2034. Fresh raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries, pine needles, thyme, sandalwood and cloves on the nose. Medium-bodied with a very fine, precise tannin frame. Focused, compact and still so youthful. The 2018 Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Los Chacayes contains 15% Malbec and spent 18 months in foudres. Dark garnet red in the glass. The nose presents notes of herbs, mint and touches of blackberry and blackcurrant with hints of jam and ash. Broad and taut in the mouth with a vigorous flow and good volume and freshness. It's full bodied with long-lasting flavor. A superlatively balanced wine that wears its heft and concentration lightly. Drinking window: 2024-2035. Score - 96. Aromas of black licorice, iodine and blackberries with hints of nutmeg. Medium- to full-bodied with a super structure yet at the same time polish and finesse. Extremely long and attractive with energy and polish. The glacial soil and western aspect of the vineyard make this special. Better in two or three years and beyond. Try after 2027. A contemporary classic by which to measure Argentine Malbec, the 2018 As Bravas Malbec is a spectacular wine in every regard. It derives from a 1.7-hectare parcel of ungrafted vines planted in Cordón El Cepillo's colluvial limestone soils and contains 5% co-planted Sémillon. It was fermented in concrete pools with 30% whole clusters and underwent a 23-day maceration before maturing for fully 64 months in a 100-year-old Italian foudre. From the first pour, there is a quietly commanding quality to the nose, which ceaselessly evolves around a dark-fruited core and myriad savory aromas of dried spices, charcoal, ash, licorice, fresh herbs and violets. The palate is seemingly endlessly layered, combining a dense, staining texture with sophisticated understatement and supreme elegance. It culminates with an incredibly long, impactful, concentrated and captivatingly weightless finish, further elongated by a sturdy graphite-laden core and ultra-refined tannins that continuously swell. Complex and savory with orange peel and some cedar wood to the ashy blackberries and minty blueberries. Some iron, black chocolate and asphalt, too. While this is broad on the palate, it is not a heavy wine, with dusty tannins that extend through the finish, together with the juicy fruit. Smooth, tight and long. Very intriguing. Drink or hold. Los Paraísos sits on an old river bed in Rivadavia and has a mixture of clay and gravel soils. Denser and darker than many Bonardas, with blackberry and damson fruit flavours, finetannins, some whole bunch texture and spices and top notes of pine and laurel. Drink date: 2023-2028. Score - 94. One way to introduce this Gran Enemigo Blend is that it's a selection of the best that this winery can offer from its red vineyards, distributed between Agrelo and Gualtallary - the first in the Luján de Cuyo D.O., and the second, in the extreme north of the Uco Valley. All of the varieties come from Gualtallary, and 50% is malbec. After 15 months in foudres, this is a wine that still seems very young - full of firm, wild tannins and ripe red fruits everywhere.
