Volcanic Hills Winery is so named because the Okanagan Valley was home to volcanic peaks during the Jurassic period, 180- to 60-million years ago. This wine is a quirky blend of Zweigelt, Merlot, Maréchal Foch and Pinot Noir that spent 12 months ageing in oak. A splash of Zweigelt Icewine is added just before bottling, lending delicate sweetness to the rich, jammy fruit.
This wine is sourced from Volcanic Hills's own estate vineyards in West Kelowna as well as from select growers in Osoyoos. Each grape variety is fermented and barrel aged separately in a mix of French and American oak for 12-16 months, depending on the grape. The resulting wine is charismatic, rich and complex, with black cherry, plum, clove, mint, chocolate and spice.
