One of those 'nearly there' Port vintages, with hopes of a good growing season dashed by last-minute rain still restrained on the nose, with liquorice-like richness beneath; opulent, broad and sweet with fresh berry fruit and a touch of dark chocolate and spicy, peppery tannins on the finish. Drinking window: 2015-2030. Score - 93. (Richard Mayson, decanter.com, Nov. 25, 2015)
20% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz. A good marriage between bouquet and palate with black fruit and deep herb complexity. Tensioned tannins and a vibrant finish. Score - 93. (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2023)
The wine's fine perfumed black plum fruits give a wonderful jammy character while bringing out a fresh edge. These are balanced by the dry core of this beautiful wine with its rich, generous tannins. It will all come together from 2030 in a very fine, integrated wine. Cellar Selection. Score - 98. (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2019)
Saturated deep ruby. Brooding, reticent nose of cassis and kirsch; there's nothing cooked about this one! Then massive, sweet and superrich in the mouth; explodes with exotic ripeness. Intriguing note of graphite. This coats every nook and cranny of the palate and clings and builds on the back end in a way that no other wine of this vintage can match. Huge, sexy and wonderfully lush Fonseca, built for the long haul. As impressive as the best 2000s, and, along with the Quinta do Noval Nacional, is an early candidate for port of the 2003 vintage. [This will cellar for another four decades.] Score - 97. (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, Jan. 2006)
Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060. Collectibles. Score - 97. (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, Dec. 31, 2019)
Clear, deep purple colour; pronounced upfront aromas of blood orange, black plum, smoke and spice box; sweet and medium bodied with flavours of rich spicy plums and undertones of citrus, smoke and spice; long finish.
Straw colour with gold hints; floral notes, pear, dried fruit and a touch of citrus on the nose; a sweet white port with rich honey, raisin fruit and toasted almond flavours with a long finish.
