Blackcurrant, blackberry and plum give this Tuscan red a deep, mature profile, layered with leather, cedar, tobacco, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate is round and balanced, with softened tannins and enough freshness to keep the fruit lively. Gravelly minerality, licorice and smoky spice linger on the long finish.

Blackberry jam, cassis, grilled herbs and melted road tar meld together in the 2011 Solaia. Another super-exotic, racy 2011 from Antinori, Solaia is supremely beautiful. Mocha, espresso and sage are some of the many notes that add complexity. Hints of white truffle, lavender, smoke and licorice are laced into the exotic, racy finish. In 2011, Solaia has a dollop more of Cabernet Franc in the blend, added to give the wine a touch of freshness. Ripe and flashy to the core, the 2011 needs time to lose some of its youthful exuberance. At times, the 2011 could be easily mistaken for a wine from Napa Valley, such is its intensity. A new red from Antinori. Intense aromas of crushed berries with hints dried herbs and fresh mint. Full body, with wonderfully silky tannins and a long intense finish. Beautiful polished fruit. While touches of mocha and wood spice are still evident, waves of Mediterranean herb wash over the palate and the finish lingers with mint and mineral notes. Surprisingly fresh with substantial yet well balanced structure promising plenty of life ahead. According to winemaker Renzo Cotarella, Solaia starts to express its true personality at 10 years old. The 2001 Solaia, far superior to the overrated 1997 (to which I also prefer the 1999 and 1994) is a classic example of central Tuscan Cabernet at its best, ruby-purple in color, warm and explosive in its expression of black currant fruit, tobacco, tar, and graphite, superbly concentrated and dense on the palate but balanced and shapely at the same time and with a noble austerity and grip on the finish which resembles the best of Bordeaux. Super-restrained cassis fruit with an almost blueberry maturity in front of violet, clove and blond tobacco spiciness. Retasting the wine the next day, it shines with graphite minerality, pure leather, and a touch of lemon thyme. Creamy and full on the palate, it has refined and meaty tannins, with lively acidity and great balance overall. You would not think this wine was aged in 100% new French oak for 18 months because of the great fruit concentration on display, but the top quality of the oak used is evident. The potential of Solaia is to be seen over the years, to discover its character as it matures. It's never cutesy, always elegant. Drinking window: 2021-2040. Score - 97.
