The 2018 Solaia continues to develop beautifully. Resonant and ample on the palate, with tons of vibrancy, the 2018 offers terrific vibrancy as well as character. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, blackberry jam, licorice and spice build as the Solaia gains momentum over time. The 2018 is dense and beautifully layered, yet retains the mid-weight structure of this super elegant vintage. Drinking window: 2026-2043. Score - 98. (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, July 19, 2022)
Blackcurrant, blackberry and plum give this Tuscan red a deep, mature profile, layered with leather, cedar, tobacco, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate is round and balanced, with softened tannins and enough freshness to keep the fruit lively. Gravelly minerality, licorice and smoky spice linger on the long finish.
I was blown away by the 2011 Matarocchio (100% Cabernet Franc). From 15-year-old vines planted some 60 meters above sea level on the Tuscan coast, this wine is absolutely stunning, delicious and simply unforgettable. Only produced in 2007, 2009 and 2011, this third edition shows towering aromas of sensuous dark fruit, leather and tobacco. If Cabernet Franc is the darling grape of this appellation, Matarocchio is a reason why. The mouthfeel is penetrating and powerful, but seamless and silky smooth at the same time. The tannin management is excellent. This is one to keep in the cellar. Drink date: 2016-2038. Score - 97. (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Oct. 30, 2014)
The 2007 Solaia (magnum) captures all the exotic richness of the year in its luscious, racy personality. Raspberry jam, spice and white chocolate give the 2007 its decidedly flamboyant feel. There is not much subtlety here, but the 2007 offers tons of immediacy in a flashy style that is hard to resist. It is one of the most enjoyable wines of the night. Drinking window: 2022-2042. Score - 97. (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Sept. 22, 2020)
A new red from Antinori. Intense aromas of crushed berries with hints dried herbs and fresh mint. Full body, with wonderfully silky tannins and a long intense finish. Beautiful polished fruit. This is 100% Cabernet Franc. Better in 2014 [through 2024+]. Score - 94. (jamessuckling.com, Aug. 8, 2011)
The 2010 Solaia rounds out this flight in style. Swaths of tannin give the 2010 a real sense of explosive energy and vibrancy that only builds with time in the glass. A whole range of dark aromas and flavors give the 2010 its brooding, inward personality. Tasted from magnum, the 2010 is very young, but its pedigree is unmistakable. Drinking window: 2024-2050. Score - 98. (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Sept. 22, 2020)
