As Ontario's international reputation for excellent premium Riesling continues to grow, it will be sustained by wines such as this. Vibrant, with honey, fresh fig, herbs and citrus, this always delivers the fine, pure mineral for which both great Riesling and Ontario are so renowned. It will easily reward five years in your cellar and will be superb with lightly grilled or smoked fish.
David Johnson and Louise Engel named their winery Featherstone to pay homage to the gourmet food shop they once owned. 'Feather' because the shop specialized in poultry, and 'stone' for the stone rock face and quarry adjacent to the vineyard. This bistro-style Riesling-based blend is an aromatic, easy-to-sip delight. It's lifted and floral, with bright apple, pear, lime and mineral tones. Try it with sushi.
This Cab Franc consistently overdelivers at this price point. Excellent depth and complexity of floral, cassis, cedar and savoury herbs notes accented by chocolate tones. Balanced and structured, it can be enjoyed tonight with your favourite grilled meats.
This Gamay is aged in American oak barrels for 10 months. The aromas of black cherries, plums, red currants, anise, smoke and pepper leap from the glass. It's juicy and bold with light tannins, bright red berries, pomegranate, a touch of spice and a tangy, lifted finish. Score - 91. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, July 15, 2024)
This is a new wine for Featherstone, a charmat style bubbly that's a blend of Cabernet Franc (60%) and Merlot (40%). The name is an ode to Engel's dad, who taught physics. It shows a light pink colour in the glass with a persistent bubble and notes of fresh strawberries, cherries, watermelon, floral accents and a smidge of citrus. There is a touch of sweetness on the palate with a lively bead and ripe red berries, a bit of peach and a juicy, vibrant finish. Fun bubbles at an attractive price. Score - 88. Named for the red-tailed hawks that fly above the vineyard protecting vines from starlings and other pests, this 100% Merlot is fermented using wild yeast. Flavours of black fruit, cherry, cocoa, cassis and cedar will have your taste buds soaring! This rare bird is exclusive to LCBO.
'After a terrible polar vortex,' explains Featherstone co-founder Louise Engel, 'we thought we had lost our Gewürztraminer vines. But like the phoenix, they rose again.' This inspiring wine shows rose petal, honeydew melon, grapefruit, lychee and ginger, with a rich, food-friendly texture and just a hint of residual sweetness. Sip it with curries, turkey dinner, or Muenster cheese.
A bright and graceful rosé blending cabernet, gamay, and pinot noir, dressed in a luminous, deeper shade of pink that hints at its character. Crisp and mineral-driven, with a delicate chalky edge that adds texture and charm. Lively tartness frames juicy notes of strawberry and cherry, delivering both refreshment and surprising depth. Utterly gulpable, yet more layered than most wines at this price point - a clever overachiever. Tasted May 2025. Score - 89. (Sara d'Amato, winealign.com)
