Deep-ish ruby with good purple rim and a discreetly foresty, complex bouquet enshrining dried herbs, forest underbrush, some earthy savoury notes. There's dark cherry to plum with hints of fivespice similar to the Premium bottling. The palate is deep and well structured, concentrated and driving. The tannins are insistent and firm, well balanced with the weight and power of the fruit. A majestic wine that will blossom if given more time in bottle. Tremendous length, a lovely deep-set core of sweet fruit, and a satisfyingly climactic finish. Drink date: 2025-2038. Score - 98. (Huon Hooke, therealreview.com, July 8, 2023)
The 2022 The Standish Shiraz is again providing me with the opportunity to assess bottles two days apart, and how different they are. The freshly opened bottle, as we would all experience upon our first opening, is tight and fresh, with cracked fennel seed, black peppercorns, cumin and ras el'hanout, then dried blueberries and licorice, hints of arnica and raspberry. It's cool and mineral, with a graphite finish. I cannot overstate how much better the wine tastes after two days. All of the edges smooth out, and it is composed and complete ... what a wine. Balance and harmony in a single swoop. It's savory, though. Super. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and foil. Drink date: 2024-2047. Score - 98. (Erin Larkin, robertparker.com, May 9, 2024)
This release represents a profound change at this address from a culture of rich wines hewn of old vines and traditional winemaking, at least in an Australian sense, to one of earlier harvesting and a grasp for freshness. Sure, the ancient vines remain. Yet despite the palpable intensity and drive, there is a twiggy dryness, a paucity of amplitude and a generosity that is synergistic with an early harvest window. Olive and dark fruits, sure. Time may bestow further beauty. I score with the benefit of the doubt in mind. Drink from: 2022. Drink by: 2030. Score - 95. This really sings with intense, ripe pinot fruit in an irresistibly complete style. Deeply complex, intense aromas of fresh dark cherries, orange-peel and violets, as well as blueberries and a subtle, earthy edge. Wet stones here, too. The palate is so very silky and has a plush, vibrant and fluid texture with seamless delivery of ripe red and dark-cherry flavor in supple and silky mode. This is very open and drinkable. Very complete and long. Drink or hold. Ranked #68 in James Suckling's Top 100 list of 2020. Score - 98. (jamessuckling.com, Dec. 1, 2020)
This 2020 Reserve Chardonnay is blessed with saturating, palate-staining fruit. With yellow peach, preserved lemon rind, brine, red apples and crushed nuts, with even a touch of lanolin and Malt-o-Milk, this is complex and ever-evolving in the mouth. Full-bodied yet taut, this is delicious and satisfying. It's a really great wine! Drink date: 2022-2037. Score - 95+. (Erin Larkin, robertparker.com, Nov. 30, 2022)
