The nose is a teenager's exhilaration on a summer night out, as the innocent aromas of vanilla, lemon and toasted nuts are left behind in favor of cigarette smoke, leather jackets and hot pavement. On the palate, however, childhood refuses to be left behind entirely, as afternoon snacks of apples and almonds lead into a finish that's deep and toasty, like the feeling of falling asleep in the car and knowing your parents will carry you in. At first blush, could pass for Burgundy. Score - 95. (Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast, March 1, 2024)
Complex and deep character with ripe blackberries, raisins, dried roses, dark chocolate, toasted walnuts, dark licorice and wild mushrooms with a little bit of tar. Full-bodied, layered and compact with a broad and velvety tannin structure that lasts long on the palate. Classy, reserved style with hits of sweet tobacco at the end. Needs three to four years to completely come together. Score - 96. (jamessuckling.com, June 26, 2023)
Dark cherry, blackberry and plum give this Taurasi, Campania Aglianico its bold core, layered with tobacco, leather, pepper, earth and a floral violet edge. The palate is dry and full-bodied, with firm tannins, subdued acidity and a savoury mineral undertone. Oak and black fruit remain well integrated through a structured, smoky, slightly rustic finish.
The Mastroberardino family specialize in ancient varieties indigenous to Campania. Falanghina is an ancient grape thought to have been responsible for creating the most sought-after wine of the Roman Empire: the legendary Falernian. This present-day Falanghina shows lime, peach, banana and other tropical notes, plus garden herbs and mineral. Try it with seafood or grilled-tofu bites.
