This wine has seen several name changes (from Il Toro to RomiTòro and now Romitorio). The Castello Romitorio 2021 Romitorio is a hearty, full-bodied red blend with the muscle and power to mimic the beautiful Sandro Chia drawing of a raging bull on the front label. Fundamentally, this wine shows an all-Maremma spirit with rich concentration, big fruit weight and a whole range of savory and black fruit aromas. This wine is a delight to drink; it has a soft texture and is just raring to go straight out of the gate. This is one of Italy's ultimate value wines. Drink date: 2023-2028. Score - 93. Filippo Chia and his team kill it in this vintage. The Castello Romitorio 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Filo di Seta is a beautiful and balanced wine. This estate is making some of the best Brunellos from Montalcino today. In the not too distant past, its vineyards were once considered too cool for ideal fruit ripening, but with climate change, the vines are now in a prime position for balanced phenolics, sugars and acidity. This wine shows a wide and complete bouquet, spanning many aromas, all delivered with direct vertical intensity. This is one of the delightful oxymorons that occurs with fine wine. It shows soft, building intensity, but most importantly, the fruit quality is bright and fresh (with 7,760 bottles made). This is a keeper. Drink date: 2026-2045. Score - 98. Resplendent with a thousand different colours this regal glass of Brunello alternates notes of lemon, face powder, sandalwood, white pepper, linden, rose petals, pink grapefruit and guaranà. In the background the notes of green tea leaves and peppermint give a notable freshness to the matrix. Medium bodied, perfectly mature tannins of a silky character and a very fine finale which exalts from the centre palate onwards to the dynamic, smooth closure. Better from 2024. After tasting and loving the annata, I had high expectations for the 2016 Brunello diMontalcino Filo di Seta Riserva. This is youthfully restrained and grumbling in the glass, but it's worth waiting for, as a captivating display of mentholated herbs, dusty rose, lavender, black cherries, hints of animal musk and crushed ashen stone evolves before your eyes. It's deeply textural and polished in feel, but also full of zesty, cooling acidity that enlivens the sultry core of dark fruits and exotic spices. A saturation of tannin coats the palate, creating a massively structured and long finale with lingering remnants of salted licorice and inner violet tones. The 2016 Riserva Filo di Seta may be a masterpiece in the making, though it will be many years before it shows all of its hidden beauty. Drinking window: 2026-2040. Score - 98.
