Ontario Chardonnay with a generous oak signature: baked apple, lemon curd, peach and mango wrapped in vanilla, toast, hazelnut and butterscotch. The palate is creamy and full, but bright citrus acidity and flinty minerality keep the richness from feeling flat, leading to a warm, lingering finish.
The fruit comes from both estate vineyards - the Westcott Home Farm and Butlers' Grant. The grapes are hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, wild fermented and then aged in French oak for 10 months. I'm finding the Niagara Chards from 2023 to be more robust and giving in their youth and that is on display here in spades with the estate wine and single block Chard reviewed below. The nose shows ripe pear and yellow apples in an opulent style balanced by citrus zest and saline with butterscotch, toasty vanilla and spice. It has a creamy, buttery texture on the palate with baked pear, apple crumble, toasted almonds, lemon tart, baking spices and a luxurious finish. It's rocking right now and there's really no need to cellar more than a couple of years. Score - 92. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, June 26, 2025)
This Pinot Noir is sourced from a block of 30-year-old vines at Butler's Grant Vineyard. It is fermented using wild yeast in open-top fermenters, resulting in delightful flavours of raspberry, cherry and baking spices. Red fruit and juicy acidity are framed by silky tannins and a lengthy finish. Pair with soft cheeses.
This wild fermented Riesling from the oldest vines planted in 1980 at the Butlers' Grant Vineyard is aged on its lees for six months and undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation. It's finished at 7 g/L of RS and 9.5% abv. This is a personable and minerally laced Riesling that shows a nose of lemon-lime, white peach, apricot, floral notes, saline and trademark ginger notes. There's subtle flintiness on the palate with lovely texture, ripe orchard fruits, zingy citrus, that trademark ginger note, a touch of honey and mouth-watering acidity through a lifted, fresh finish. Can cellar through 2035. Score - 93. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, Feb. 25, 2025)
A pure, rustic expression of Ontario Pinot Noir from one of the province's best producers of the grape. A 22 month long élevage in neutral French oak follows wild fermentation that ultimately delivers honest and wildly seductive notes of red cherry, ripe raspberries and fall leaves. Fine tannins and a masterstroke of tension coupled with bright acidity brings undeniable energy, and promises of a silk-infused love story in the glass. Score - 94. This bubbly is made in the traditional method of Champagne using the same traditional triumvirate of grape varieties, namely Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Wonderfully complex, it offers layers of delicate brioche, lemon zest, crisp green apple, white flowers and toasted almonds, with a distinctive mineral undercurrent and a long, luxurious finish.
This 100% Pinot Noir, traditionally-made sparkling wine was disgorged for this tasting (hence no label quite yet). It's wild fermented, aged on the lees in tanks for 24 months with a dosage of estate Chardonnay (5 g/L). It shows a light rosé colour and elegant bead in the glass followed by a nose of fresh red berries, red currants, lovely saline, brioche, flint and toasty notes. The palate reveals fresh picked raspberries, cherries, watermelon and toasty brioche with a rounded texture, elegant bubbles and length through the finessed finish. Can age this through 2030. Score - 93. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, Sept. 9, 2025)
Niagara Pinot Noir rosé offers salmon colour, strawberry, red cherry, watermelon, rose petal, peach, lemon zest, and a hint of salty stone. It is dry, crisp, and quietly textured, with enough body for pork tenderloin, salads, fish tacos, or a well chilled glass outdoors.
The latest Violette is a Charmat charmer, drier than most, light, tight, tart and made fine by proper acidity. In this idiom the mauve or purple flower is right, correct and for those on a festive fizz budget, also indispensable. Drink 2024-2026. Tasted November 2024. Score - 89. (Michael Godel, winealign.com)
