A vivid ruby color with a garnet tinge and super-restrained nose of licorice, oak bark, smoke, wood, cigar box, leather, dark chocolate, crushed violets and prunes. Freshness and subtlety. Full-bodied and elegant on the palate due to ripe, filigree tannins with long acidity and a toasty, savory aftertaste. One of the great Amarones. Corvina and Rondinella. Ready to drink now, but intended for the long haul. Ranked #1 in James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of Italy in 2024 and Top 100 World Wines in 2024, as well as Wine of the Year in 2024. Score - 100. A rich magenta hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggio Al Granchio is a serious wine that amplifies things further and will need some decanting if opening now. Forward with great aromas of graphite, black cherry liqueur, cracked pepper, sage, and porcini, it's full-bodied yet weightless on the palate and has phenomenal concentration while remaining elegant all the way through, it offers plush, velvety tannins and mineral undercurrents while retaining wonderful purity and a seamless texture. This stunning wine deserves several years in cellar. Drink 2026-2046. Score - 98. (Audrey Frick, jebdunnuck.com, Feb. 28, 2024)
One of three single-vineyard expressions, the Val di Suga 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali is the most representative of the estate philosophy and the Sangiovese grape. This classic Brunello shows the thick lines and ripe fruit that this vintage is known for, but it also offers mineral notes or crushed stone and iron ore that add contours and framing to the fruit. There is an almost saline or salty note on the close that you don't get with the other wines in this series. Drink date: 2021-2035. Score - 95. (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Oct. 15, 2020)
Clear, rich ruby with fine garnet shimmer. Very clear and fragrant nose, full of blackberry and mulberry, plus some leather and liquorice. Shows itself on the palate full and full-bodied, opens with grippy tannin in many layers, very long echo on the finish, a long runner. Score - 97. (Othmar Kiem & Simon Staffler, falstaff.com, March 19, 2021)
The 2016 Vigna Spuntali Brunello di Montalcino is the most brooding of the lineup from Val di Suga and is sourced from the southwest of the region on sandy soils. There are aromatics of black raspberry, licorice, menthol, sage, cinnamon, and iron-rich earth. Its Mediterranean influence is felt on the palate with ripe black cherry, dried herbs, and sun-baked earth. This is the fullest bodied and most savory of the Val di Suga lineup, with more roundness and grip. Its structure will benefit from cellaring for several years and will be great drinking over the next 20 years or more. Maturity: 2026-2040. Score - 96. (Audrey Frick, jebdunnuck.com, March 4, 2021)
Since the 1980s it has been Count Francesco Marone Cinzano who continued plantings to the current number at 140 hectares, 108 of which are dedicated to Brunello production. Since August 27, 2010 the whole estate including vineyards, olive groves, other fields and even the gardens are farmed exclusively following organic agricultural practices. The vineyards are located on the southern slope of the Montalcino territory, on hilly lands and extend over 540 hectares, from the Orcia River to the village of Sant'Angelo in Colle, at about 450 metres over sea level. Tasting Poggio al Vento in the midst of dozens of 2016s is more than curious indeed and in fact this island in that deepening stream is a red faced beauty. Shows the great contrast in vintages with higher tonality and fruit of a very different ripeness. Makes for a style not quite apposite but of a clarity that shows place with more transparency. Also a liquid chalkiness to reflect on the more baritone notes played by many '16s. Hard not to compare and contrast at this time while in Col d'Orcia terms the PaV resides in that pantheon with great distinction. Will grace tastings through the ages as well as any that have come before. Drink 2023-2034. Score - 96. (Michael Godel, winealign.com, Nov. 2021)
Bertani has been crafting wines since 1857. The 2022 is a blend of 80% Corvina Veronese and 20% Rondinella sourced from 10- to 15-year-old vines planted in marl-limestone, clay and basalt soils. This ripe, focused, elegant wine shows generous red fruit, currant and herbs and would pair nicely with gourmet cheeseburgers or veggie kebabs.
Bertani has been crafting fine wines in Venice for more than 150 years. They have long been admired for their innovative approach to winemaking. This 80% Corvina Veronese and 20% Rondinella was aged in a combination of 30-, 54- and 75-hectolitre barrels for 24 months. It's silky, rich and fine, with dark fruit, spice, savoury herbs, and a touch of tobacco leaf.
The 2015 Vigna del Lago is lifted with ripe red cherry fruit, clove, and dried roses. The palate has the most lift of the Vigna wines in this vintage, with tart red fruits, orange zest, and tomato leaf. It offers elegant and fine tannins, with vibrant acidity for the vintage. Maturity: 2025-2035. Score - 94. (Audrey Frick, jebdunnuck.com, March 4, 2021)
