As Ontario's international reputation for excellent premium Riesling continues to grow, it will be sustained by wines such as this. Vibrant, with honey, fresh fig, herbs and citrus, this always delivers the fine, pure mineral for which both great Riesling and Ontario are so renowned. It will easily reward five years in your cellar and will be superb with lightly grilled or smoked fish.
Well-known for their bold experimentation, Featherstone crafted this wine by blending two batches of Pinot Grigio; one left on the skins to soak and the other pressed immediately. The resulting wine shows a light pink hue in the glass with crisp citrus and wild berry flavours on the palate accented by floral aromas.
A ridiculously affordable price for a Merlot this good. The wine is aged in 100% fine French oak barrels (25% new) from Tonnellerie Sirgue Nuits Saint Georges for 10 months. There is an intriguing, perfumed note on the nose with dark cherries, black raspberries, cassis, integrated spices, and subtle earthy accents. It's rich with some tannic structure and weight on the palate followed by juicy red berries, anise, cassis, and elegant spice notes through a long, lifted finish. [You] can age this for 5+ years and you can feel pretty damn happy you paid only $20 a bottle. Score - 92. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, June 5, 2023)
This Cab Franc consistently overdelivers at this price point. Excellent depth and complexity of floral, cassis, cedar and savoury herbs notes accented by chocolate tones. Balanced and structured, it can be enjoyed tonight with your favourite grilled meats.
Always excellent. Drinkable all year round straight up or with food. Time to try their 2023 vintage. A blend of Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. Aroma: Fully ripe raspberry, strawberry and Thames River Farms sugar babe watermelon. This rosé is what you might call fruit expressive! Palate: Smooth with some raspiness on the back palate. Raspberry, cotton candy grapes and dragon fruit. Short finish with a little hot. Personality: I fall in line with many Ontario rosés in the sense that I am world quality. Food Match: Lightly creamed smoked salmon sauce over bucatini. Sublime with roast ham. Cellarability: Will hold nicely to 2025-year end. Score - 93. (Robert K. David Johnson and Louise Engel named their winery Featherstone to pay homage to the gourmet food shop the two had once owned. 'Feather' because the shop specialized in poultry, and 'stone' for the stone rock face and quarry adjacent to the vineyard. This bistro-style Riesling-based blend is an aromatic, easy-to-sip delight. It's lifted and floral, with bright apple, pear, lime and mineral tones. Try it with sushi.
'After a terrible polar vortex,' explains Featherstone co-founder Louise Engel, 'we thought we had lost our Gewürztraminer vines. But like the phoenix, they rose again.' This inspiring wine shows rose petal, honeydew melon, grapefruit, lychee and ginger, with a rich, food-friendly texture and just a hint of residual sweetness. Sip it with curries, turkey dinner, or Muenster cheese.
The Canadian oak used to craft this fan favourite is sourced from trees grown along the Grand River in Ontario, and the grapes are hand-picked and fermented using native wild yeasts. Expect complex suggestions of campfire smoke, pine cone, golden russet apple and yellow plum, and savour the wine alongside pork chops and baked beans, or carnitas with smoky cheddar and apple slaw.
This Gamay is aged in American oak barrels for 10 months. The aromas of black cherries, plums, red currants, anise, smoke and pepper leap from the glass. It's juicy and bold with light tannins, bright red berries, pomegranate, a touch of spice and a tangy, lifted finish. Score - 91. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, July 15, 2024)
