From an historic, family-owned winery, this blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía de Rioja is a perennial customer favourite. White Rioja wines are always a treat, and this one delivers delight in spades. Look for white blossoms, lime, peach, and a tantalizing touch of salinity on the close. A great wine for smoked or grilled fish, this will drink through 2028.
Cedary, super fresh and showing autumnal leaves and forest-floor complexity. Impeccably composed, brambly palate with dried red plums, red berries and cherries. Freshness through the finish and lots of energy carrying mellow flavors. Drink or hold. Score - 97. (jamessuckling.com, Aug. 2, 2018)
The impeccable 2021 Aro is a triple-selection of vines from six different Muga vineyards, all planted to older vines, a selection of a selection resulting in 70% Tempranillo and 30% Graciano here. The addition of Graciano is bold and groundbreaking; very few wines at this level of quality tend to include it, but here we are, it's made its case. Not made every year, it was produced in 2010, 2015, 2016, 2019 (another 100-point year), and 2021, with about 6,200 bottles made, but there will only be 2,000 bottles or so of the 2022. Black olive, balsamic, textured woody notes, and a depth of full-bodied berry fruit meld together seamlessly across velvety tannins and a firm structure. It should hit its prime in about 8-10 years and glide elegantly into the future another 20-30. Maturity: 2033-2055. Score - 100. (Virginie Boone, jebdunnuck.com, July 30, 2025)
The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making. 2016 was a very elegant year, with aging potential, volume and very good acidity and freshness. It's full-bodied but fine-boned, has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.25 grams per liter acidity. It has terrific balance, with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle. They have also been working on the selection of wood used. This wine matured in French and American oak barrels for three years, and the oak is super integrated. It was bottled in January 2020. It was an exceptional year with volume and quality. Drink date: 2024-2040. Score - 97+. (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, Feb. 29, 2024)
Produced in what Isaac Muga calls the 'super vintage' of 2015, this is one of the great Prado Eneas, a wine that falls just short of perfection. Sourced from the cool zone close to the Montes Obarenes, it's a stunning, age-worthy cuvée of Tempranillo with 15% Garnacha and 5% Mazuelo, aged in French and American oak. Combining structure with finesse, this is concentrated, chalky yet refreshing with wonderful precision and palate length. Drink date: 2028-2040. [To enjoy tonight, decant for one hour.] Score - 99. The 2010 Torre Muga, was one of the first new-wave Riojas and it has already demonstrated that it ages in a classical style (first vintage was 1991), but winemaking has gained much in precision since that first vintage, the different varieties are picked and fermented separately and you can feel a much more compact and balanced wine in recent vintages, with more subtle and better integrated oak. It is sourced from the oldest family vineyards blending 70% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 10% Mazuelo, picked and fermented separately in 2,000- and 8,000-liter oak vats, blended after malolactic and aged in new French oak barrels for 16 months. It's quite dark, opaque and surprisingly aromatic (because I expected it to be closed and hard as nails) with notes of flowers, ripe fruit and some lactic, smoky and spicy tones from the French barrels. It's a structured wine, with slightly dusty tannins, pungent and clean acidity, great balance, combining power and elegance. 40,000 bottles produced. It's still a baby that will require a couple of years to show its true face and will age into a beautiful Rioja. Drink 2016-2030. Score - 95. (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, Dec. 29, 2013)
The 2004 Torre Muga is not as powerful as the 2005 but displays better aromatics. It is loaded with spicy fruit with great depth and concentration, impeccable balance, and a lengthy, pure finish. Give it another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink it through 2034. Score - 96. (Jay Miller, robertparker.com, June 28, 2010)
The 2004 Muga Reserva Seleccion Especial is deep crimson-colored. Dense and packed, it offers up aromas of cedar, spice box, mineral, pencil lead, and assorted black fruits. It nicely conceals enough structure for 6-8 years of evolution. This lengthy effort should drink well through 2030. Score - 94. (Jay Miller, robertparker.com, Feb. 28, 2008)
Only made in very good years, such as 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010, this displays the more modern face of Muga, with 90% French oak and dense, powerful fruit flavours of black fig and plum, with plenty of smoky vanilla sweetness and the acidity and structure to age. Drinking window: 2016-2030. Part of Quality Rioja 2010: Panel tasting results. Score - 96. (Tim Atkin, MW, decanter.com, Feb. 4, 2019)
